Whether just diagnosed or adjusting as you grow, learning to eat well as a diabetic is an important part of managing the disease and maintaining your overall health. Having diabetes does not mean “just cut out the sugar” as people were told in the past, in fact there are really no forbidden foods for a diabetic it is just important to adjust to a standard healthier eating lifestyle. In fact, people without diabetes will benefit as well from a healthier eating lifestyle.

Whether you are working with a professional dietician or going it on your own; the main thing to remember when creating a menu, is to include a variety of delicious and nutritious foods. One way to make enhance foods and add more flavor is by adding gourmet spice blends to your recipes.

When planning a healthy menu, here are a couple of healthy food options to consider:

Whole Foods: Foods that are unprocessed or unrefined and usually contain little to no added ingredients. This includes foods such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, and even some dairy products. The benefits of whole foods include added fiber and high concentrations of antioxidants.

Raw Foods: Foods that are raw, uncooked, or in their organic state are classified as raw foods. Other foods that might be included in a raw foods diet are nuts and seeds as well as raw fruits and vegetables, eggs, and fish.

The one food you need to be more cautious of as a diabetic is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates turn into glucose as they digest; this is the key thing you will have to balance with insulin. When eating whole grains vs. processed carbohydrates you will find that your glucose level remains more stable.

In addition to the foods you eat, be aware to keep yourself hydrated by getting plenty of water. Eat smaller meals more often throughout the day. Other things to consider when choosing foods and snacks: Eat less butter or margarine. Choose lower fat options in dairy products.

Once you have designed a healthy menu plan, the next thing is to monitor other elements of your lifestyle. It is important that even as you are monitoring your food you begin or continue to have physical activity or exercise. Walking can be a simple way to do this, by walking even just 20-30 minutes a day you will notice great benefits to your overall health.

Though diabetes is something you will have to manage for a lifetime, doing so can become second nature as you modify diet, increase exercise, monitor blood pressure, and make other changes that will increase your overall health. Continue on with a positive outlook as you make the best of it each day.

When you’re diagnosed with diabetes, the amount of change that occurs in your life depends entirely on your type of diabetes. Diabetes is broke up into two different types, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes results from your body’s failure to produce insulin while Type 2 diabetes happens when your body decides to become insulin resistant. You will have to constantly monitor everything that goes into your body if you have Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes provides you with a little bit of leeway. You still have to manage your life, but not to the same extent as what you would have to do if you had Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes makes up for 90% of the cases of diabetes in the world.

A third type of diabetes pops up in pregnant women called gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs when women who did not have a previous diagnosis of the disease experience high levels of glucose in their blood. The main effects of this type of diabetes are babies that are born at a size larger than their gestational age, jaundice, and low blood sugar. Children born from mothers who had gestational diabetes during their pregnancy have a higher risk of getting diabetes later on in life. Mothers who properly regulate their glucose levels can avoid getting gestational diabetes. It’s common for women to believe they can eat whatever they want when they’re pregnant. The exact opposite is true. You should eat a little more than you did before you were pregnant, but not so much that it ends up becoming unhealthy.

Type 1 diabetes requires you to inject insulin into your bloodstream on a regular basis. You have to test your blood countless times a day to make sure your sugar levels are balanced. If you take too much insulin, you could have serious problems, so it’s important to figure out how much insulin you need for particular levels and address it appropriately. Many people with Type 1 diabetes use an insulin pump that monitors their blood sugar levels for them and injects the right amount of insulin without them having to do anything. You should try to balance your blood sugar manually first. Don’t hesitate to get an insulin pump if you begin to have problems.

When you receive your diabetes diagnosis, you should waste no time in purchasing a medical alert bracelet. Diabetics have to realize that medical alert bracelets are more important for their condition than any other. You could have a serious reaction at any time in any place. Sometimes you will be around people who know how to manage your condition, but there’s a high chance that you will be caught somewhere by yourself. You will want your medical alert bracelet to let medical professionals know what type of diabetes you have. The lack of a medical alert bracelet could result in improper treatment and serious complications. It is also important to have medical id bracelets for kids if you have children who are diabetic because it could mean saving their life at school or during an activity if something goes wrong.

You won’t know what you need to do until you find out what type of diabetes you have. A proper diagnosis will give you a framework for how you will maintain a high quality of life. You must stay within the treatment program your doctor plans for you or risk taking a step backward in your condition. A medical alert bracelet should remain on your person at all times. You don’t want to be caught out in public having a serious reaction and no one who knows how to help you. The drawbacks of diabetes can be managed if you maintain a program. A steady program will keep your blood sugar balanced and you healthy.

When you have diabetes, you need to take good care of yourself and one of the ways you can do that is through diet. There are plenty of foods out there that you know of that are good for you, such as broccoli and cauliflower. There is one vegetable that is really good for you but you have probably never heard of it. That vegetable is kale. Kale is a green that looks like the love child of broccoli and romaine lettuce. It is full of vitamins and calcium. It is in season year round and therefore it is a good thing to have in your health arsenal. While it does not taste particularly delicious plain and straight, it works great when you work with it and incorporate it into meals. Here are some ideas that you can use when brainstorming ways to use kale.

Kale chips. Sounds strange, tastes delicious. I recently made these in my kitchen and everyone loved them. I have some friends that are not into health foods such as tofu and such that I usually cook with. But they tried these kale chips and they loved them! You will need a bundle of kale, oven, cookie sheet, salt, and olive oil. Take the kale and cut it off the stems. Rinse it off in lukewarm water and then lay out to dry. If you are too impatient to wait for it to dry on its own, then take a kitchen towel and dry each piece. You have to go piece by piece because the water gets into the little nooks and crannies of the leaves and that could hinder the way it bakes. Once it is all dry, then rip the pieces up so they are about bite-size. Put them all in a bowl and drizzle a good amount of olive oil over the leaves and then mix it around so they all have some oil on them. Cover a cookie sheet in tin foil and preheat the oven to 325 degrees. When the kale has oil on it, then take the pieces and spread them out over the cookie sheet. Take your salt and sprinkle it over the entire sheet so that each piece has some. Personally, I like using garlic salt, but it is up to you what you like. Then put them in the oven for about 15 minutes, or until they begin to shrivel and the edges become brown. Let them cool, and enjoy!

That is my favorite recipe involving kale. It is fantastic in green smoothies as well. Kale can be used in pastas, enchiladas, polenta, stews, omelets, and salads. It all depends on what your favorite foods are.

When you are diagnosed with diabetes, that is not the end of the road. Too many people are under the impression that once they have diabetes that they cannot develop anything else. This is completely untrue because diabetes, while it is caused by a variety of conditions and diseases, can also be the cause for many other conditions that become dangerous, especially when compounded by diabetes.

Heart disease is a disease that everyone should look out for and ward against, but diabetics are especially susceptible. Most people who die due to diabetes or complications relating to it, die because of some type of cardiovascular disease. Why is this? The fatty buildup and such that occur because of diabetes and that lead to diabetes also occur in the arteries and such. This leads to blockage which in turn leads to a stroke or heart attack. Smoking in addition to having diabetes increases your risk of developing a cardiovascular illness exponentially. One website suggests that if you want to decrease your risk factor then you need to quit immediately. Do all you can to become healthy because you do not want to be a statistic.

Nerve damage is one of the lesser known effects that you can experience because of diabetes. Specifically, you can develop neuropathies. A neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nerves that can cause numbness or weakness. The nerves do not get the oxygen and nutrients that they need to function properly and therefore they shut down and stop working. You can become numb anywhere in your body. Diabetics often say they experience numbness in legs, toes, fingers, and arms. This can be dangerous because you can develop ulcers and such on your feet and not know it. They then become infected and must be amputated. Do your best to avoid the extreme of this disorder.

As spoken of briefly in a post prior to this one, diabetes can occasionally lead to the loss of vision. This is because diabetes creates blockage or growth of blood vessels that are contained in the retina. The retina, for those of you who have forgotten, is the part of the eye that recognizes and reads the images that you take in. When the retina becomes damages, that is when your vision begins to fade and go. In order to avoid this, then make sure that you are paying attention to what your eye is doing. If you experience black spots or blurriness, then go in to go see your eye doctor and get an exam. They will be able to help you and will have suggestions for care that you can give yourself that is specific to your needs.

With all of these conditions, it is important that you maintain contact with your doctor because they are the ones that will be able to help you the most. Reading online articles and such can only give you an overview. Your doctor is the one who knows you and your condition best and can therefore give the most appropriate and specific information.

Avocados are very good for you to eat as you commence on your journey to fight diabetes.

Avocados are also extremely effective in fighting diabetes. They are full of ‘good’ fat (monounsaturated) which helps your heart as well as combating diabetes. It also is digested more slowly than other foods, which helps to keep your blood glucose levels from spiking after meals. They are very easy to incorporate into your diet as well. You can use them in sandwiches, soups, and as a delicious dip for you snack. The good fats in avocados has also been shown to increase sensitivity to insulin which is extremely good for diabetics.

Berries have some of the best antioxidants that you can get. They are bursting with disease fighting nutrients and can keep you feeling good and refreshed. They help to neutralize free radicals and can help you prevent things from heart disease and diabetes to the common cold and the flu. Berries that have blue tints to them help you to increase insulin production and sensitivity and also lower blood sugar. Berries are good over a bowl of yogurt, plain, frozen, or in various tasty treats.

While broccoli may not be your favorite vegetable (even though it is one of mine), it is very good for you. It is full of antioxidants, vitamin C, and chromium. Never heard of chromium before? it is an element that helps you to control your blood sugar over long periods of time. Broccoli can be eaten in many different ways if you do not like it plain. It can be eaten with a dip, sauteed with garlic, baked in a casserole, added to a pasta dish, or used in soups. I’ve also heard that broccoli with melted cheese is absolutely delicious.

Olive oil is super good for you and your diabetes. It actually contains an anti-inflammatory quality to it that is comparable to that of aspirin, believe it or not. Olive oil is full of the ‘good’ fats and helps to reverse the insulin resistance that your body has. It also works at slowing down your digestion so that way you are able to glean more nutrients from the foods that you eat and you are able to keep your blood sugar level fairly even because everything enters the blood stream slower. Olive oil can be added to just about any food or meal and adds a great, almost gourmet, flavor.

One of my personal favorites, peanut butter. Peanut butter, like many of the foods on this list, is full of monounsaturated fats that help to keep your glucose levels even and increases your cardiovascular health. You are also getting the fiber and protein that the nuts have. You can eat it spread over a piece of toast, use it as a dip with apples or bananas, eat it plain, or create a spicy dip out of it.

Any of these foods can act as a good place for you to start on your journey to a healthier you. You can become the person that you have always wanted to be and control your diabetes at the same time.

The diagnosis is only the first part in your battle against diabetes. Many people believe that the diagnosis is everything, that once you know that then you are able to become well again. ALl the diagnosis does is tell you that there is something wrong. It is completely up to you whether you do something about it or not. One of the first steps that anyone is going to tell you to take is changing your diet. What you should start to do before you change your entire eating plan is to begin eating more of the foods you like that are good for you. Here are some examples of those foods and what they can do for you.

Apples have always been labeled as the ‘healthy fruit’, ever since the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” came into being. There is some truth behind that proverb. Apples are very high in quercetin, which is an antioxidant and helps your body boost its immune system and keep you healthy. These antioxidants work at neutralizing free radicals in your body, as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory and cell stabilizer. It helps to protect your body from heart diseases and it minimizes the effects of diabetes.

Cinnamon may seem like a very bizarre supplement to take to stave off the side effects of diabetes, but it has been proven to help. Cinnamon helps the cells within the body increase in sensitivity towards insulin which directly combats diabetes. It also increases your cardiovascular health in addition to that. The way that people ingest cinnamon is through a variety of extracts, supplements, and by sprinkling it over foods or mixing some in with a cup of tea.

Chocolate is also a good food to help you fight diabetes. This is a food where you have to be very careful because there are so many different kinds that you do not want to pick one that hinders you. The best kind of chocolate is very dark chocolate. It has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce blood pressure, and reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in your body. Do not eat this all the time because if you do so you are not progressing on the road to a healthier you. Do not confuse dark chocolate with milk chocolate as well because that can also be detrimental.

Leafy greens are also critically important when you are trying to become healthier and get your diabetes under control. Greens such as collard greens, spinach, and kale are all good for you. They help you out in the long term as well. Greens are great sources of vitamin B, iron, calcium, and fiber. They can help you keep your eyesight stronger and better longer, because many diabetics tend to have trouble with their eyes as they live longer with their disease.

If you have not, pre-diabetes is a condition where a person has blood sugar levels that are above the regular level but not enough above to actually be categorized as full-blown diabetes. It is important that you are aware whether you have it or not because then you can know how you can best care for your body. Typically, you can take care of your pre-diabetes through exercise and dieting because that can help your blood sugar levels normalize.

There is very little being advertised in the media about diabetes. Diabetes is becoming one of the biggest health problems in the United States. This can be related to the rising obesity rate and other health issues in America. Pre-diabetes is becoming more prevalent as well as the full types of diabetes. It is important to educate people so that they know what to look for and ask their doctor about so that, as a nation, we can prevent diabetes as much as possible.

Celebrities have a huge amount of power as far as the media is concerned. When a star makes a big deal about an issue, it becomes a big deal. Paula Deen was recently diagnosed with diabetes and she is now trying to advocate health and well-being. There are plenty of other celebs that are trying to get the word out there. Nick Jonas is one of the biggest names that comes to mind. Now, there is an advocate for pre-diabetes care. Alec Baldwin has led a great example for those who have pre-diabetes. He has taught them how they can manage it by doing it himself. Alec has been very honest in discussing what he has done to take care of his body and manage his pre-diabetes.

On “Entertainment Tonight”, Alec talked with the hosts about how he has cut sugar out of his diet and has upped his exercise routine. He is now doing Pilates and other work-outs. After being diagnosed, he lost 30 pounds in an effort to get a handle on his condition. He is a great example to those who may be working a lot and cannot find the time to exercise. He said that when he cannot work out he has needed to make changes in his diet so that he is able to stay on top of everything. He eats healthier and it shows because he is noticing the difference.

Let him be you example if you are one of the 80 million Americans suffering from pre-diabetes. When you get a handle on it at that state, you may never develop a chronic strain of diabetes and you can even boost you body to the point where you are not at risk for heart illness as well.

If you do not have diabetes, have you ever wondered how you can help to fight it? There are huge fundraisers held for heart disease and cancer, but those for diabetes are not as widely publicized and do not attract the same attention as things such as the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. What is something that you can do to fund diabetic research?

There is a website, www.ShopDiabetic.org, that you can go to when you are looking for a gift or something for yourself. This is a shopping website that is funded by the American Diabetes Association and much of the profit goes towards funding research regarding diabetes. The idea is that when you purchase something from this website, you are getting something as well as giving money towards a cure and solution to diabetes. Last year, according to the website, a little less than forty million dollars were given to research funds as a result of the commerce that took place on this website. The slogan on the site is: “Shop to Stop Diabetes.”

A variety of goods can be found here. They have everything from cookbooks and cards to clothing and calendars. For Christmas, the organization launched a special deal on holiday items. The brand name, Gift of Hope, donated every dollar they made directly to research institutions to fund their work regarding diabetes. There are charm bracelets that you can buy along with scarves and a huge selection of books. This is just one of the many options that you have as you are looking to make a difference in the world of diabetes. If you have a friend or family member that was recently diagnosed, you can find the perfect item here for them.

The best part about this website is that there is a link at the top to works published by health care professionals that specialize in diabetes. That is a simple and easy way for you to browse through periodicals and journals that apply specifically to you and what you are going through. The American Diabetes Association wants to provide all that they can to those who have been recently diagnosed or those still struggling. They provide this website as an option for donation as well as information and such. Books such as The Uncomplicated Guide To Diabetes Complications can be found there. You can even use it for yourself if you were diagnosed and you are currently dealing with the ramifications that come with that. By buying something here, you are helping yourself and the entire population suffering from diabetes.

Taking care of your legs and feet is an important part of any diabetic’s life. They have heard from their doctors and friends many a time that if they do not take care of their legs and feet, they may lose them. It is not rare at all for a diabetic to receive an amputation of the leg or foot. This is due to a specific type of numbness that is felt in that region that results in sores and cuts that become infected and need to be surgically removed. The circulation in a diabetic’s legs and feet is also not very good which results in the same thing.

But there is good news! The number of amputations for feet and legs for diabetics has fallen considerably over the past few years. This is a wonderful sign that people are coming to a knowledge of how to care for their body and their disease. This also shows that people have easier access to better treatments. The improvement in the numbers is incredible and marks a new generation of Americans. Bad news seems to be in the forefront of everyone’s mind and shows in the posts of this blog and of others. America seems to be on a decline as far as healthy living goes. This study restores hope that things can be turned around and advances towards healthy lifestyles can be made.

The number of diabetes-related amputations has fallen by a little more than fifty percent from the mid-nineties to now. That is a very powerful statistic! Diabetes has become the seventh most common cause of death in the United States. That can be a very scary idea for those who have been diagnosed with it. However, if there is anything to be taken from this study, it is hope.

When you manage your diabetes well and properly, you will be able to experience the benefits and prevent your disease from progressing further. In many cases you will even be able to reverse the effects of diabetes. This study shows that when you are educated and receive proper treatment, changes can happen. Medicare has taken a more active role in diabetes prevention and education and that could potentially be one of the reasons that the number of amputations dropped. However, it is also because people have been taking responsibility for themselves and have been going in for regular examinations. Over the past couple of years, people have been going in for regular foot exams and other care that is offered to diabetics.

Doctors have been making great progress. People have been diagnosed much earlier on than in the past. Because of these early diagnoses, they have a milder form of the disease and therefore the care is much easier. Take advantage of all the opportunities offered you and you will be able to see the change in your life.

They are attempts to make the general populous knowledgeable about the disease.

Education and diabetes prevention go hand in hand. During November, there was a huge movement towards educating the population because the number of cases of diabetes in America increase exponentially every year. This is because of an increase in people who are obese and have other conditions that contribute to their risk factor.

Because of the mounted attention that has been drawn to diabetes and diabetes prevention, a national program has been developed for implementation in communities and it is directed at educating people about preventative measures they can take to stay healthy and diabetes free. This program is estimated to significantly reduce the number of cases of type two diabetes by approximately nine-hundred thousand over the course of twenty-five years. This program is projected to save around thirty billion dollars in medical expenses spent on diabetes over that twenty-five year period. This means that the program would begin to pay for itself.

This program would target most of what is discussed on this blog and other diabetes prevention and coping method blogs. It would also be aimed at those who have pre-diabetes that way they can keep it from developing into full-blown diabetes. This program will also serve as a support group for those who have difficulty changing their lifestyle to fit their new disease. There will be exercise programs and help with creating menus that fit your health needs. It is a great way to network and find a work-out friend or someone who you can stay in contact with and report your progress to.

Another facet of the program is screening people. There are a couple million people in the United States that do not know they have diabetes. This program will allow people to be screened and tested at a fraction of the normal cost. If a person is found to have diabetes, then they will be referred to the appropriate group that is near them so that they may receive the information and individual care that they need.

There needs to be a shift, worldwide, towards healthy living. So many people are unaware of how to take care of their body and do not even know that diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular illnesses, can be prevented. The benefit of having this program based out of the community is because each community has different needs. Some communities are very good at eating healthy and exercising and just need a little bit of guidance and support. While there are other communities where the majority of the population live a sedentary lifestyle and are dependent on fast food. By tailoring this program to the individual community needs, there will be greater success and it will be more widespread.

If possible, I recommend that you research this program more and look to see volunteer opportunities and other ways to become involved. When you become involved then you will learn more about diabetes and how you can treat your own and help others.
